Peter Jackson's film trilogy adaptation of J. Of course, terrific doesn't mean perfect. As with every big-budget Hollywood project, The Lord of the Rings showcased so many different story arcs, characters, and events all colliding in one set of films that it was inevitable that the trilogy would have its high points as well as some comparatively unsatisfying ones. The climactic scene in the book sends tingles down your spine. Converting it to the screen without dampening its grand effect was a make it or break it moment for Jackson and his crew, and they came through with flying colors. Ian McKellen's expression is perfect as Gandalf stands there, alone in the dark, looking exhausted yet wielding a hidden power. And then there's the Balrog.

To this day it is still one of the most widely acclaimed series of fantasy films. The realizations of Middle Earth and its characters offered in these films are legendary. Which parts give us the most vivid and engaging portrayals of the characters and the world? Which scenes make us come back to this modern trilogy of classics over and over again? Top 10 BEST Lord of the Rings Characters

It's not just that this sixth film marks the end of Peter Jackson's Middle-earth series at least until the five-part Silmarillion adaptation is announced. It's the fact that Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens worked so many glorious Rings references into the script for Battle of the Five Armies , including one in particular which we won't spoil, but has kept us smiling for the last fortnight. So without further ado, here are our nine favourite moments from the Rings trilogy in chronological order. For the purposes of this list, we used the theatrical cuts rather than the extended editions. The Nazgul attack at Weathertop. A genuinely chilling moment that recalls Jackson's horror movie pedigree, this early set piece sees Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry set upon by a shadowy gang of wraiths called the Nazgul think Dementors on a particularly bad day. Just when things are getting really dire - not to mention stabby - for Frodo, in charges Aragorn to save the day in fire-swinging style.

Regardless of your feelings about The Hobbit trilogy, the sheer scope of Peter Jackson's six film exploration of J. Tolkien's Middle-Earth mythos is the kind of thing we're unlikely to ever see attempted again. Unlike the open-ended narratives of superhero films, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies have definite resolutions. While there's some kind of Lord of the Rings TV series in the works over at Amazon right now, that's likely to be more prequel than reboot we hope , so this list should endure! So, in celebration of fourteen years of Peter Jackson bringing the most seminal works of fantasy fiction to life, we look at our many favorite moments from the two trilogies. There's considerable heavy lifting that needs to be done in order to tell Sauron's origin and get the necessary exposition out of the way to set up the general Middle-Earth mythology at the start of Fellowship of the Ring.
