Accomplishing a large body of acclaimed works through his life, Nazrul is officially recognised as the national poet of Bangladesh and commemorated in India.

Kazi Nazrul Islam: Interesting Facts About the 'Rebel Poet'

Born in a Bengali Muslim Kazi family, Nazrul Islam received religious education and as a young man worked as a muezzin at a local mosque. He learned about poetry, drama, and literature while working with the rural theatrical group Letor Dal. He joined the British Indian Army in His nationalist activism in Indian independence movement led to his frequent imprisonment by the colonial British authorities. Nazrul's writings explored themes such as freedom, humanity, love, and revolution. He opposed all forms of bigotry and fundamentalism, including religious, caste-based and gender-based. He profusely enriched ghazals in the Bengali language.

I am a poet of the present, and not a prophet of the future. No, I belong to all countries and to the entirety of humanity. And Nazrul was a spectacularly vibrant activist. He was a member of the working committee of a political party. Once he had even gone to the extent of running in an election—even if unsuccessfully—for a seat in the Indian Legislative Assembly. It is not for nothing that not only one or two but six of Nazrul books of poetry and prose were banned by the British colonial government in India—an unprecedented event in the history of the world—and that Nazrul himself had to go to prison.
