Very Special Relativity: An Illustrated Guide by Sander Bais

This book presents an unique and easy understandable insight in the special relativity.

This book does a fairly good attempt of introducing the concept of the special relativity theory. The author is a renowned theoretical physicist from the Amsterdam university and is able to convey the message to a broad public.

Illuminating pictures show a surprising light on the implications of special relativity, such as time dillution, the twin paradox and the curving of space time. Any mathematical formulas are presented in such a way that they can be skipped and the less mathematical adapted user can skip directly to the conclusions.

All in all, a very good attempt. I made it halfway through this book, which isnt to be blamed on the book, but my rather limited grasp of the fields involved. Anyway, this book presents an unique and easy understandable insight in the special relativity.

Special Relativity - Lecture 3

The elegant illustrations help Bais lead the reader from Einstein's postulates through the ideas of simultaneity, inertial frames, time dilation and relativistic energy and momentum, eschewing the usual admonitions against equations. The author's clever idea of pairing every page of text with a space-time diagram a graphical tool actually used by relativists to illustrate the concepts and mathematics suits the geometrical basis of its subject perfectly It is rare for science books to rate as objects in their own right, but "Very Special Relativity" is a lovely little object.

His research focuses on problems in particle physics, from quantum fi eld theory to string theory, but he enjoys making excursions to many adjacent fi elds. His special talent lies in making physics accessible to a larger audience. His ability to transform the complex into the comprehensible has allowed him to convey the essential message of science to many. In this book he takes the reader on a journey, unveiling the beauty and meaning of seventeen equations that constitute the basis of our knowledge of the physical world.
