Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos

If any American fictional character of the twentieth century seems likely to be immortal, it is Lorelei Lee of Little Rock, Arkansas, the not-so-dumb blonde who knew that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Outrageous, charming, and unforgettable, she’s been portrayed on stage and screen by Carol Channing and Marilyn Monroe and has become the archetype of the footloose, good-hearted gold digger, with an insatiable appetite for orchids, champagne, and precious stones. Here are her “diaries,” created by Anita Loos in the Roaring Twenties, as Lorelei and her friend Dorothy barrel across Europe meeting everyone from the Prince of Wales to “Doctor Froyd” – and then back home again to marry a Main Line millionaire and become a movie star. In this delightfully droll and witty book, Lorelei Lee’s wild antics, unique outlook, and imaginative way with language shine.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Review

Loos invented the ditzy flapper in her bestselling book. The short novel was such a hot ticket that it went through 20 printings in the first year. Now is your turn to have a crack at it. Earlier events are here and here — and you can read more about the event at the Another Look website. My Stanford Report story also online here :. Winston Churchill , William Faulkner, George Santayana and Benito Mussolini read it — so did James Joyce , whose failing eyesight led him to select his reading carefully. The bestseller sold out the day it hit the stores and earned Loos more than a million dollars in royalties.

Marilyn Monroe was very nervous about this follow-up to the star-making Niagara , as she wasn't sure she was up to the challenge of either the musical numbers or the deadpan comedy. However, just as he had done with Katharine Hepburn on Bringing Up Baby , Howard Hawks guided Monroe towards her new screen persona and, in the process, subjected her to a total make-over to transform her from a pin-up into a star. Inheriting a role for which Betty Grable was now deemed too old, Monroe departed from Anita Loos's stage character to achieve a brand of innocent sensuality that was to become her trademark. But much of the credit goes to Hawks, who moulded her curves and charm to create a new kind of sex kitten, who was much less threatening than such blonde bombshells as Jean Harlow and Mae West. Indeed, he gave all the acerbic wisecracks to the sturdier Jane Russell, so that Monroe's humour seemed to be almost accidental as it would do again in How to Marry a Millionaire. Yet, she worked hard to accomplish this spontaneity, with choreographer Jack Cole putting her through rigorous rehearsals.

Loos was inspired to write the book after watching a sexy blonde turn intellectual H. Mencken into a lovestruck schoolboy. Mencken, a close friend, actually enjoyed the work and saw to it that it was published.
