Marvel zombies army of darkness
Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness by John LaymanTo throw a disclaimer out there from the off, Im not much into films so while Ive not technically watched the Evil Dead movies, I know enough of them from almost osmosis that I can understand and appreciate the references etc.
Likewise with the Marvel characters, Ive never been an avid comic book collector and the whole parallel dimensions, intrinsic details of various character profiles etc, alternate timelines etc can and often does go straight over my head. I do however still know enough about the main protagonists and vagaries to know the basics.
Fortunately, that is where the nature of this book actually lends itself. You dont have to be an expert on either horror movies or the Marvel universe to be able to enjoy this book.
Far from being what some puritans would probably refer to as a true Marvel novel, this should be treated far more as a standalone, utterly separate story, that if it were a musical or video output would undeniably labelled a mash up.
I wont delve too deep in case of accidentally unleashing any spoilers but suffice to say the only story element you should know is that Ash (wise-cracking brash zombie killer from The Evil Dead) has just been killed, only to wake up in this strange world of pumped up freaks in spandex which soon finds itself under assault from an unknown plague which turns its sufferers into sentient zombies.
There are some nice little zigzags in the plot and enough irreverent humour to keep this from feeling like a generic cash cow flogging idea.
As I said earlier, even if youre familiar with the majority of Marvel characters or have never seen Evil Dead, the juxtaposition between the two, at least in this book, makes for a fun accessible read.
