Did You Know That Polar Bears Aren't White?
Polar bear skin is black and the fur is not white at all. Each individual hair is a clear hollow tube called guard hair and looks white because of reflected light. Like the guard hair it is colorless. This optical illusion provides good hunting camouflage in the snow and pack ice. Polar bears fur is oily making it water repellent. This keeps the hairs from being matted down and makes it easy for bears to shake any water and ice free after swimming.

Who doesn't love the big, burly white bears of the north? Polar bears—at the top of the food chain and vital to the health of the Arctic marine environment—are important to the cultures and economies of Arctic peoples. But as the climate warms, that ice is melting, threatening polar bears. Why do polar bears have white fur? Polar bears have white fur so that they can camouflage into their environment. Their coat is so well camouflaged in Arctic environments that it can sometimes pass as a snow drift. They have a thick layer of body fat, which keeps them warm while swimming, and a double-layered coat that insulates them from the cold Arctic air.
