Eleven-year-old Delphine is like a mother to her two younger sisters, Vonetta and Fern. She's had to be, ever since their mother, Cecile, left them seven years ago for a radical new life in California. While the girls hope to go to Disneyland and meet Tinker Bell, their mother sends them to a day camp run by the Black Panthers. Unexpectedly, Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern learn much about their family, their country, and themselves during one truly crazy summer. Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern's story continues in P. Be Eleven and Gone Crazy in Alabama.

This is an excellent book for elementary and middle school students. It is well-written, captivating, esp. I had no idea such a place a 3-mile by 6-mile plot of land for freed and escaped slaves existed in ! Why didn't I learn this information when I was in school? All students should read this book to learn more about the times of slavery in North America, mainly in U. They were given the opportunity to live with dignity and free.
