Ten Things I Hate about You by David Levithan

When I was 13 years old 10 Things I Hate About You was my favorite movie. I think I saw it in the theater at least 3x. I loved it! This movie was the first time I ever saw Heath Ledger and it was love at first sight. I was also still nursing my crush on Andrew Keegan(what ever happened to him) and I thought Julia Stiles was the coolest. Im tempted to rewatch the movie but I fear I wont enjoy it as much as an adult.

If Im being honest this book is probably a 2 star read but my nostalgia for the movie caused me to up the rating. 10 Things I Hate About You is a retelling of William Shakespeares The Taming Of The Shrew. Bianca the most popular sophomore at Padua High wants to date but cant until her older sister Kat does and Kat has no interest in dating or parties. So Cameron one of the 2 boys vying for Bianca comes up with a plan to get Kat to go out with school bad boy Patrick.

Despite the condensed and rushed nature of the book it did make me want to watch the movie again. If for no other reason than to see a young Heath Ledger.

It also changed my life. I grew up in a house with one small TV. Eventually, we did get a second, equally small TV, with a built-in VHS player, which my parents abandoned downstairs in the living room, unnoticed by our couches, which continued to have eyes only for each other. Oh, and movies. Misdirection , Kat might call this. I sit on the rug in front of the television. I know this song.

Meet Bianca Stratford , the most wanted sophomore at Padua High. She's sweet and pretty and totally boy-crazy. Meet Cameron James and Joey Donner. They're both totally crazy for Bianca. Which one has her heart? Alas, neither. Meet Kat Stratford.

Teen film 10 Things I Hate About You was released in theaters on March 31, , which means this year marks the beloved film's 20th anniversary. The movie is full of icons — including Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford and the late Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona , the role that made him an eternally beloved star — and has been held up as an enduring teen comedy for its discussion of ever-relevant topics like sexual politics and feminism. Now that you know it's 10 Things I Hate About You's 20th anniversary , you're probably desperate to watch the film on repeat. But once you've relived the antics at Padua High a few times, I've got some modern YA book recommendations that will practically be screaming "I Want You To Want Me" at you when you read their synopses. These reads are sure to give you the same feels as your favorite teen film, with new stories and characters you'll love just as much as your Prada backpack. Keep scrolling for the the full list below, and then check out more of Bustle's coverage of the film including 13 Things You Didn't Know About 10 Things I Hate About You and 28 Absurd Things From 10 Things I Hate About You including but not limited to waiters serving shots of tequila at a high school party and cowboys as a teen subculture. This film truly does have everything!

Of course, drama, romance and a lot of awkward moments ensue. But things could have turned out differently because several actors you know could have ended up as the leads. I recently spoke with the stars including Gabrielle Union and David Krumholtz , the director Gil Junger and others about casting near-misses, face-drawing and their memories of Ledger, who died of an accidental prescription-drug overdose in Here are edited excerpts from the conversations. Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah wrote the script at a time when teen rom-coms based on the classics were trending in Hollywood. We were young writers who had never sold a script before, and it was very unusual you would get your first script made, let alone greenlit six months after it was optioned. It had this feeling all around of firsts.
