But preparing to tell my son that I will be divorcing his father was absolutely one of the worst. Thinking about breaking the news filled me with dread, not to mention gut-wrenching fear, anxiety, incredible guilt, and the oppressive weight of shame. My son, after all, was innocent. A sweet, dear soul who loved his father and mother both. I struggled with the anxiety for weeks in advance.

However, it's essential to be absolutely certain that you will move forward with the divorce before you tel the kids. In addition, you'll want to tell all of the children at one time. If your kids are different ages, plan to share the basic information at the initial gathering, and follow-up with the older children during a separate conversation. The manner in which you present this news to your kids will, in large part, affect the degree of their anxiety and whether they anticipate a positive outcome for themselves. If the meeting becomes a screaming match, your kids will be far more unsettled about what is happening. It is not important, or even appropriate, that you provide specific details about why you are planning a divorce. However, your kids will want to know why this is happening.

Don: Separation Talk Script Guidelines. Reassure, reassure, reassure. A word or two is best. Less is more. After they are told, at some point soon after, each parent spend time with each child alone, not to tell. NOT going into who did what to whom. But down here in the real world, perhaps the most surprising thing about the Brangelina decoupling is that it was so long in coming. Anybody who has ever had a child, let alone six, or anyone who has been a child which is anybody reading this , should know that an unstructured, multinational living situation, combined with world-class humanitarianism—and, oh yes, high-flying Hollywood careers—would have to be something of a myth. And then after that I totally disassociated and gave myself amnesia. Just kidding. The less I acknowledged it, the less it existed as my reality.
