Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief by Paula Vogel

Having slept with Othellos entire encampment, Desdemona revels in her bawdy tales of conquest. Her foils and rapt listeners are the other integral and re-imagined women of this Shakespeare tragedy: Emilia, Desdemonas servant and the wife of Iago, and Bianca, now a majestic whore of Cyprus. The reluctantly loyal Emilia pesters Desdemona about a military promotion for her husband. Her motive, however, is that he leave her a wealthy widow, preferably sooner than later. Bianca, now a street-wise, yet painfully naive prostitute, visits Desdemona thinking she is a very good friend and fellow hooker (at least one night a week). Bianca thinks the worst when she soon discovers that Desdemona knows intimate details of the life of her lover, Cassio. Though Desdemona has never been intimate with Cassio, her life is soon in danger when her husband, Othello, also suspects her of infidelity.

The Vortex, through December 1 Running Time: 2 hrs What's been going on, boys, in the chinks of our world machine while we've been out building the bulkheads of civilization according to our own dreams of power and shaping our society to reflect, you might say, the molecular structure of testosterone? What have those other ones been doing? Those other ones: the bit players, the supporting roles, the mirrors that exist to reflect our best image of ourselves back to us, to assure us -- by their self-abnegation -- that we're the important ones. You know, the women. Well, one of them, Paula Vogel, has been pretty busy. Seems this frail has written herself a play, my brothers.

The play has been published by Dramatists Play Service and is a fascinating read. I respectfully disagree with some of Mr. Summary: Desdemona: a play about a handkerchief takes a look at Othello from the perspective of the women in that classic play. Why did Emilia betray Desdemona? The central machinations of Othello have grave repercussions for Cassio and Iago and the Moor, but Ms. Vogel contemplates the effect of these events on the women in the play.

True, both plays refract well-known stories through the eyes of minor characters who make the admittedly major sacrifice of their lives. And both emphasize class differences among these characters. It says a lot about the original play that most of its female characters can be defined by the men in their lives. According to Vogel, a closer look would reveal that although Desdemona is not carrying on an affair with Cassio like her husband suspects, she is sleeping with most of the other men in the city. Emilia struggles to stay faithful to Iago — despite the fact she hates him — for the promise of security that he brings. She especially felt that the play was about women figuring out how to fill and not fill the roles society gives them. The set itself is a hodgepodge of items from different periods.
