Perhaps his biggest claim to fame is the design of the initial version of Visual Basic VB , a wonderful piece of workmanship. One could write an entire essay on the good and evil unleashed upon the world by offering the almost infinitely malleable user interface of VB, but this is not the place. But Cooper is not resting on his laurels: he heads a design firm that is turning out first-rate products embodying the best in what he calls "interaction design.
Collectively, these four Masterclass Professionals have not only put the tradecraft of Soft-Design under the spotlight, but in many ways created the spotlight as well. As Alan Cooper mentions in the introduction, software V. Only recently has IxD Interactive Design found both its place and well-deserved recognition in soft-design; and that, in large part, is due to the these four professionals authoring books such as this one. Many practicioners have adopted them and seen dramatic improvements in their products. This book would not have been possible without the commitment of the many organizations over the past decade that hired Cooper, my design consulting company. They demonstrated a great measure of self-confidence to break from the pack. By the same token, the many brilliant and talented people who have worked at Cooper have pushed the limits of my original thinking far beyond where I started. They have put their professional reputations on the line to prove that there is a higher standard and better ways to achieve it.
