The Shadow Lines by Amitav Ghosh

Opening in Calcutta in the 1960s, Amitav Ghoshs radiant second novel follows two families—one English, one Bengali—as their lives intertwine in tragic and comic ways. The narrator, Indian born and English educated, traces events back and forth in time, from the outbreak of World War II to the late twentieth century, through years of Bengali partition and violence, observing the ways in which political events invade private lives.

It is a book that captures perspective of time and events, of lines that bring people together and hold them apart; lines that are clearly visible from one perspective and nonexistent from another; lines that exist in the memory of one, and therefore in another's imagination. A narrative built out of an intricate, constantly crisscrossing web of memories of many people, it never pretends to tell a story. Instead, it invites the reader to invent one, out of the memories of those involved, memories that hold mirrors of differing shades to the same experience. The novel is set against the backdrop of historical events like the Swadeshi movement , Second World War , Partition of India and Communal riots of in Dhaka and Calcutta. Split into two parts 'Going Away' and 'Coming Home' , the novel follows the life of a young boy growing up in Calcutta , who is educated in Delhi and then follows with the experiences he has in London.

Nazia Hasan pays a tribute to Ghosh and his seminal work of fiction in this special essay. Partition of India has been one of those turning points in the history of the subcontinent, the repercussions of which have not ended yet. It lives in memories, in monuments, in songs and stories, besides popping up now and then in various symbols, occasions and rituals. It makes the Katha and Daastaan for the coming generations for centuries perhaps, because it has everything aplenty: the joys and the sorrows more sorrows than joys, of course for the common man associated with it can weave sagas of its own. Basically Indian Independence happened as an abstract thing, because of being accompanied by Partition and its violence. It did not provide people with any perceptible, overnight overhauls. It was tangible only in a negative sense, a reality only in its violence and bloodshed.
