I Feel Better with a Frog in My Throat: Historys Strangest Cures by Carlyn Beccia

It wasn’t too long ago that people tried all sorts of things to help sick people feel better. They tried wild things like drinking a glass full of millipedes or putting some mustard on ones head.  Some of the cures worked, and some of them…well, let’s just say that millipedes, living or dead, are not meant to be ingested.

Carlyn Beccia takes readers on a colorful and funny medical mystery tour to discover that while times may have changed, many of today’s most reliable cure-alls have their roots in some very peculiar practices, and so relevant connections can be drawn from what they did then to what we do now.

Feels Like a Hair in My Throat – Why it Happens?

Posted 3 years ago , 5 users are following. Really hoping someone on here can offer me some help or advice. I hope this is the correct forum if not, could someone move it? I am in real discomfort, as I have the feeling of a hair or obstruction on the back of my mouth, close to, or on my right tonsil. I think it is related to post-nasal drip, although even when I am not feeling a wish to cough up phlegm, there is still the feeling of a foreign object in the back of my mouth. My regular doctor said he could see phlegm resting on my tonsils.

Medically speaking, however, this description could apply to a number of different conditions. This could have been something you ate or any number of airborne particles, including the hair from your cat or dog. Eating a number of bananas at least two or three can often smoothly cleanse your throat of stuck particles.

While I was eating lunch with a group of friends, one began to cough and complain that it felt like she had a furball in her throat. I asked if she had had this sensation before and she nodded. I then asked if it was only with certain foods and whether she was allergic to ragweed. She again nodded yes and wondered how, based on her simple comment about the furball feeling, I could have known the rest. The answer is that her complaint was a classic symptom of something known as oral allergy syndrome -- a food allergy with a twist. If you have a food allergy, your immune system reacts to a specific protein that normally doesn't create problems for other people.

Globus pharyngeus is the sensation of having something stuck in the throat. While it does not in itself cause functional difficulties, it can cause.
