Doctor Strange: The Oath by Brian K. Vaughan

Update: Okay, I had to bump this because I came across something while searching for Doctor Strange images on Google:

Ha! That is awesome!

Original post:

I admit that the main reason I picked this up at the library was because of this:

But I also like the idea of Dr. Stranges abilities. Hes a mage, the Sorcerer Supreme, can astral travel, go to different dimensions, levitate (his cloak is badass), put people to sleep just by saying sleep. (That is way cool.)

Lets be honest, he is way cooler than Captain America and a lot of the other Marvel characters. His side kick, martial arts expert, Wong, is pretty tight too.

This also features the Night Nurse, who accompanies Strange and Wong on a quest.

They seriously need to put Rosario Dawson in the movie!

I enjoyed this. Doctor Strange almost makes Iron Man look humble. Haha. Almost. There wasnt anything overly complex about the plot, but it kept me entertained. Lots of battling demons, enchanted weapons, an elixir that can cure all disease, pharmaceutical mega-villains...

Thumbs up!

Is Doctor Strange Good or Bad? The Marvel Character Isn't Your Typical Hero

His reign stood for many decades as the resident vague, arrogant, white guy in charge of all the magic around here. It appears that it takes more than that to build a Hollywood movie these days or when they first tried it in , and in the effort put forth by the MCU, fans of Doctor Strange were saddened to see every part of the character jammed into a much too small suitcase. The references were overblown, the heroic arc was flat, the villains were splashy, and the supporting characters only had one side to them. At least all the reviews insisted that it looked cool. Somehow, this makes stories about magic all the more alluring.

In a year where they can seemingly do no wrong, Marvel Studios is taking a huge gamble on going weird with their adaptation of the spells and sorcery based Doctor Strange. Casting leading man Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role of douchebag doctor turned douchebag Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange, the movie dives headfirst into the mystical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there are many things that bring Doctor Strange to a screeching halt. It tries to be tongue-in-cheek like Iron Man and mostly fails, hitting the audience with ill-timed jokes that fall flat. The only thing Doctor Strange is actually good at is providing a visual spectacle that they only give the audience for a quarter of the run time. Check out what it did right, and so very wrong.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has quite the diverse selection of heroes. There's a giant green monster, a tech genius billionaire, a Russian super spy, the ultimate soldier, a literal god, and even an alien raccoon. But fans have yet to see anyone quite like Doctor Strange.

What It Got Right

In , the Marvel Cinematic Universe will welcome Doctor Strange , a magical man in a giant, red cape who summons the powers of ancient gods and demons to do mystical stuff to bad guys. Doctor Strange is a very important part of Marvel's history, having been around for almost as long as Spider-Man and Iron Man, but if the Master of the Mystic Arts sounds like a weird twist to the normally grounded world of Marvel movies, well, that's because he is. So far, Marvel has been very careful about the inclusion of things like "magic" or "ancient gods" into their insular movie world. All of the magical stuff in Thor is attributed to aliens and technology, and the powers of Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron are explained away as an effect of the "cosmic energy" of Loki's super-techno scepter. With all of this tip-toeing around the use of magic or the mention of anything even vaguely religious in the MCU, how will the filmmakers explain the powers of Doctor Strange?

Doctor Stephen Strange is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Doctor Strange serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Inspired by stories of black magic and Chandu the Magician , Strange was created during the Silver Age of Comic Books to bring a different kind of character and themes of mysticism to Marvel Comics. The character's origin story indicates that he was once an egotistical surgeon. After a car crash severely damages his hands and hinders his ability to perform surgery, he searches the globe for a way to repair them and encounters the Ancient One , the then-holder of the title Sorcerer Supreme. After becoming one of the old Sorcerer Supreme's students, Strange becomes a practitioner of both the mystical arts and the martial arts. He has a suit consisting of two main relics, the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto , which give him added powers.
