This is, of course, a phase most of us grow out of — whilst we might never appreciate the way the show was made for audiences when we were too young to watch, we can learn to appreciate the merits of it. Except for the first season, that was different and therefore approved of. In many ways its reputation has never really recovered, with the passage of time being particularly cruel to its pace and look as well as the mores of the day. Frankly, we were due to give the era something of a critical redress, to try to look at things with a generous eye rather than a mean-spirited one. It also helps that as both professionals and fans our heroes Robert Shearman and Toby Hadoke are aware of the exigencies of television production and the constraints the show was produced under — they never descend to the cheap jibes about wobbly sets and low budgets. So when the second instalment came out and Mad Norwegian Press asked me to review it I jumped at the chance. They would each watch one episode of Who a day until they had completed the entire run. Although for us this is released sometime later, for the boys it is the next day. They have just finished the last episode of the War Games the night before and they are then thrust into colour and the 3 rd Doctor and it takes us through to 4 th Doctor adventure the Horns of Nimon. They are never sycophantic, they are never overly hard on episodes or adventures and they see the adventures with an analytical mind as well as a Whovian one. This is a delicate balancing act in my opinion and one they pull off perfectly. This is aided by the fact that Robert would send Toby his thoughts before Toby wrote his.
